Edwards Waves White Flag as Wolves Get Mauled 3-0 by Leeds

Rob Edwards has essentially thrown in the towel on Wolves' League One survival hopes after watching his side get comprehensively outclassed by Leeds in a damaging 3-0 defeat.

Well, that's one way to kill the mood around Molineux. Rob Edwards has done what most managers spend their careers avoiding - publicly admitting defeat before the mathematical fat lady has even started warming up her vocal cords.

Wolves' 3-0 capitulation against Leeds wasn't just a football match; it was apparently the final nail in a coffin that Edwards seems to have been measuring up for some time. The manager's post-match assessment was about as uplifting as a soggy pasty: "The writing's on the wall."

Now, we've all seen managers clutch at straws when their teams are circling the drain, spouting nonsense about "taking it one game at a time" and "believing until it's mathematically impossible." Edwards, however, appears to have skipped straight to the acceptance stage of grief, which is either refreshingly honest or spectacularly defeatist, depending on your perspective.

The three-goal hammering from Leeds was the sort of performance that makes you wonder if Wolves' players were secretly browsing League Two housing markets at half-time. When your gaffer is essentially preparing the relegation acceptance speech before the season's even over, you know things have gone properly pear-shaped.

Leeds, meanwhile, will be delighted to have administered what might well be the final blow to Wolves' League One aspirations. There's nothing quite like putting three past a team whose manager then immediately starts talking about mathematical inevitabilities to really drive home your superiority.

Edwards' brutal honesty might be admirable in some circles, but it's hardly the sort of fighting talk that gets players throwing themselves into last-ditch tackles or supporters believing in great escapes. When the man in charge is essentially updating his CV mid-season, it's fair to say the writing isn't just on the wall - it's been there so long it's probably started peeling off.

The real question now isn't whether Wolves will go down - their own manager seems convinced that ship has sailed - but whether this public surrender will galvanize or completely deflate whatever fight they had left in them. Either way, Leeds have done their bit in what's looking increasingly like Wolves' League One farewell tour.
