Bromley's Perfect Run Meets Perfect Storm as Bottom-Feeders Barrow Bite Back

The League Two leaders' magical 21-game unbeaten streak finally meets its match against rock-bottom Barrow, though Andy Woodman's men somehow emerge from the wreckage still five points clear at the summit.

Well, it had to end sometime, didn't it? Bromley's frankly ridiculous 21-game unbeaten run finally came crashing down to earth on Saturday, and naturally it was bottom-placed Barrow who delivered the knockout punch. Because nothing says 'football is a cruel mistress' quite like the league's basement dwellers toppling the runaway leaders.

The Ravens had been flying high since their last defeat – a 3-1 thumping at Walsall back on November 29 when they were mere mortals sitting fifth in the table. Fast forward four months and Andy Woodman's side had transformed into League Two's answer to peak Barcelona, sweeping all before them on an unstoppable march to the summit.

But football loves a good leveller, and Barrow proved to be exactly that. Ashley Charles had given Bromley the perfect start, no doubt triggering visions of unbeaten run number 22 among the travelling faithful. However, Josh Gordon and Danny Rose had other ideas, turning the game on its head to secure a comeback victory that will be talked about in Cumbrian pubs for decades.

Woodman, clearly still processing how his promotion-bound juggernaut had been derailed by the league's strugglers, pointed to windy conditions as a contributing factor. Whether Mother Nature was indeed complicit in ending the streak or simply provided a convenient scapegoat, the manager remains optimistic this proves to be a 'one-off' aberration.

The silver lining? Sometimes it pays to have your main rivals equally incompetent. Second-placed MK Dons also came unstuck at Salford City, meaning Bromley's five-point advantage remains intact despite Saturday's setback. With Cambridge United languishing seven points adrift in fourth and just six games remaining, Woodman's men still hold all the promotion aces.

Next up is a visit from Barnet – presumably a chance for the Ravens to remind everyone why they've spent most of the season making League Two look embarrassingly easy. After all, 21-game unbeaten runs don't happen by accident, and neither do five-point leads at the business end of the season.

The mathematical realities remain firmly in Bromley's favour, but Saturday's shock serves as a timely reminder that in football, as in life, pride often comes before a fall. Fortunately for Woodman, there's still plenty of time to ensure this particular tumble doesn't derail what has been a genuinely remarkable campaign.
